Angela Miller’s You Set Me Free

Posted in Musings on February 24, 2013 by Ed Pettus

American Idol is perhaps an icon for the American dream of success through entertainment.  Unfortunately, it is also an icon of much that is wrong in America, thinking that fame and fortune are the answers to our human condition.  But, AI has also had its lights in the midst of darkness.  Angela Miller is one such light.  She performed her own song You Set Me Free during Hollywood week and has set the internet and the AI judges buzzing about the performance and the song itself.  No doubt that those who believe in Jesus Christ will hear nothing but Jesus in the lyric (and rightly so), without ever having sung the name.  Others have already blogged and “youtubed” other interpretations.  As a believer I know that it is Christ alone who speaks a word and through it we gain courage, strength, and are set apart.  It is Jesus who loves us for who we are and in turn Jesus sets us free to become more than what we are when we first encountered the Christ.  I don’t know if Angela has posted the exact lyrics, here is my best guess!  Read then listen…powerful song both by the lyrics and the gifted singer.

You find me here alone / I hear a voice that’s so unknown

It strikes courage up my backbone, Strength in my heart, a life set apart

I see that’s what you are / You calm, you come, with open arms

You say I love you for who you are / When I was haunted and alone with this baggage on my back draggin me down

You set me free, Yeah / You set me free, Yeah / You set me free

I hope she has a chance to record the entire song in the future!  Regardless of the outcome on AI, Angela will have a great ministry through her music.

(Just a matter of time before AI pulls this video from You Tube, so enjoy while you can!)

Reflection on priorities…12/19/12

Posted in Musings on December 19, 2012 by Ed Pettus

As I was riding home from racquetball, I heard the radio announcer on AFR talking about getting our priorities in proper order.  Of course, the encouragement was to put God first.  We hear this all the time about God first, others second, me third, or something to that effect.  The problem is that the Bible does not talk about getting a list of priorities.  Instead we are reminded that Christ is everything, our very life.  If I put Jesus first then something else second, I immediately diminish Jesus in my life.  If I must prioritize then here it is:  1. Jesus, 2. Jesus, 3. Jesus, 4. Jesus…

I completely understand the sentiment to prioritize in life, but I think this is more a worldly sentiment and not one reflected in our life with Christ.  “When Christ who is your life appears…(Col. 3:4 ESV)” Christ is not first in your life, he is your life!  Everything else is peripheral to Christ.  I enjoy the way Peterson renders the last part of Ephesians 1, “The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church.”  The same might be said of our lives in relationship to Christ, “Christ is not peripheral to your life, your life is peripheral to Christ.”  Maybe the better image is Christ at center as opposed to Christ a first priority.  Jesus Christ dwells in you and the goal is to have only Christ dwelling in you.  Everything else is peripheral to Christ dwelling in you.  Paul uses the phrase “Christ formed in you” (Gal. 4:19).

Prioritizing Christ in our life is akin to saying God is a big part of my life.  Part?  I always want to ask about the parts where God is not involved!  I realize that folks are intending to encourage people to think more about Jesus in living their lives, but I also think it is important to understand that we are not setting Jesus first among all the things important to us or making Jesus a big part of our life, but the encouraging word from the scriptures is that Jesus is our very life.  My life, our life, is all about Jesus…his salvation, his forgiveness, his gifts, his blessings of family, friends, material things, and so forth.  Apart from Jesus Christ, I would have nothing – even if I had the most toys!  “All to Jesus I surrender,” all because Jesus is my life, our life.  Think it over for a few days, as I will, and comment if you have deep thoughts on the subject!

Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta 2012

Posted in Auto Racing (Sports Car & F1 only) on November 6, 2012 by Ed Pettus

Road Atlanta is one of my favorite places on earth!  I attended two days at the track for Petit LeMans, the ten hour/1000 mile(whichever comes first) sports car endurance race.  First day drove down and made it in time for each class qualifying, had time to run through the paddock area and see a lot of the cars and drivers and lots of fun stuff.  Day two was race day!  Here are a few of my pics.

This pic of the Oak Racing #35 is one of my favorites.  I have always had a liking for the GULF colors ever since they were the colors of the Gulf Porsche 917 back in the day.

The Delta Wing was fun to watch on track.  While it looks like it could never work, it was surprisingly fun to watch turn and glide down the track.

Other cool racing pictures!

You can check out a couple of my videos, nothing spectacular, but good sights and sounds!

The Vintage at Old Salem – BMW Gathering 2012

Posted in BMW on June 5, 2012 by Ed Pettus

Lots of fun at The Vintage this year.  I’m not sure how many cars were there but it looks like more than the previous year.  It was fun to talk with fellow enthusiasts and we even got mentioned in the local paper!  (Link below)  This was the first year I had the ’87 535is at the event as the past two years I took the ’75 2002, so this year more 5er owners stopped by to talk.

We normally make this one of our family outings during the year!

Here are some of the other 5ers I enjoyed seeing!

My first experience with leather re-dye

Posted in BMW on April 17, 2012 by Ed Pettus

After getting a price higher than I was willing to pay for upholstering rear seat, I decided to try the re-dye project on the leather.  The front seats were terribly worn and torn, but the back seat was in fairly good condition only the wrong color for my plans to transform all the interior to black.  Ordered kit from Leatherique (highly recommend) and started a few weeks ago on the reconditioning of seat before dye.  After sanding, cleaning, dying, here it is looking like new!!

I found a before pic, the only one I have…

revse28 update

Elka’s new look (the wheels look great)!

Last winter (2011) I spent lots of my spare time on the 1975 ’02 and this past winter I spent lots of my spare time dismantling the red ’87 535is.

This spring I am giving time to my white ’87 535is from which this blog gets its name.  “Elka” has had a complete interior make over – new upholstered seats in the front, dyed carpet, newly coated trim pieces all transformed from blue to black.  Painted the wheels gun metal gray and my next project is dying the rear leather seat black and finishing off the rear seat area.  Today I began sanding down the front valance from “Bernie” as I plan to paint it Alpine White for Elka since her valance has an unpleasant crack across the front.

Bernie only has two more blog posts…

Posted in BMW on March 7, 2012 by Ed Pettus

I have finished my first experience of stripping a BMW of all its parts.  Pulled the engine and transmission and finished off the steering box and motor for sunroof – all done!  The last post on Bernie will be her final resting place when she meets “the claw” and takes the journey of recycling.  I learned a lot about everything on the car, so I feel more confident I can work on Elka, my e28!

Bernie vs. Ed

Posted in BMW on March 1, 2012 by Ed Pettus

If you have read the previous BMW blogs you know the fate of Bernie, the red BMW,  Here are some updated pics.  The engine and transmission still left and I hope to have that out soon.  Everything else has been stripped – I don’t know how those chop shops do this so fast!

She looked so good such a short time ago…

Update on “Bernie” – BMW #2 crashed

Posted in BMW on December 14, 2011 by Ed Pettus

The insurance company settled on the BMW and now I am tearing her down to assess the damage and viability of rebuild. After furthur review: a parts car is born!

Before and after shots:

Frame is mangled, but somehow the bumper and valance are unharmed ‘cept for a few dings and one crack. More updates later!
